Ultrasounds have been used in a medical setting since 1956. They are an incredibly useful tool for physicians, giving a peek at the inner workings of the body and helping with diagnosis of issues within the internal organs. One of the best known uses of ultrasounds is during pregnancy. Almost all women under a physician’s care during their pregnancy will have at least one ultrasound. It usually occurs around the 20 week mark when the gender of the baby is now likely to be visible. Depending on the pregnancy and potential complications, some women will have many ultrasounds during their pregnancy in order to monitor the growth and development of the baby.
While ultrasounds are useful tools for monitoring baby’s health, they provide much more than that for the expectant family. Parents may find great peace of mind from “seeing” their little one inside the womb, moving and active, and many are overcome with emotion when they see and hear the baby’s heartbeat for the first time. It can be an incredibly bonding experience for mom, dad, baby, and other members of the family. This special moment has led to the rise in popularity of 4D baby scans, which are available from Servant Medical Imaging in locations around Oklahoma.
What is a 4D Ultrasound?
The technology of the ultrasound has come a long way since the 1950’s. Back then, ultrasounds were only available in 2D. They were flat images that were blurry and hard to decipher. If you’ve ever looked at an old ultrasound photo, you know how hard it was to see what was there even if someone was pointing it out to you. The images have become a lot clearer over the last five decades, so while the majority of ultrasounds are still two-dimensional, they provide a much clearer image of the baby inside.
Three dimensional ultrasounds started to gain popularity in the 1990’s. These ultrasounds added a new dimension to the photos; for doctors, it provided a clearer view of the developing baby inside and could help them offer early diagnosis of potential issues, such as a cleft palate, that might not show up on a traditional ultrasound. The impact on parents was profound, though. 3D ultrasounds give parents a three-dimensional view of their baby, giving them a much more accurate picture of what their baby looks like and providing them with a peak of the little one they’ll be meeting soon. It can help parents identify features their new baby shares with them, such as having mom’s nose or dad’s chin.
4D ultrasounds take the technology even further. They give the same three-dimensional view, but instead of being a photo, they create a video. This gives parents a video they can watch of their baby again and again, sharing it with family and friends who are anxious to meet the little one soon, too. Being able to see your baby move while still growing inside of the mother’s womb is a powerful, special experience, and it’s all thanks to 4D baby scans.
Are 4D Ultrasounds Safe?
Like all ultrasounds, a 4D baby scan uses sound waves to create the image. These sound waves have been found to be safe. However, like all imaging, you’ll want to ensure you are being scanned by a highly-qualified technician. This reduces the chance of any risk involved and increases the odds that you’ll get a clear photo of the baby. Look for imaging centers like Servant Medical Imaging that employ technicians who are RDMS licensed.
